(Don’t Fear) The Reaper: Cutler and Gross X The Great Frog

The song by American rock band Blue Öyster Cult from their 1976 album Agents of Fortune seems fitting to introduce our exclusive eyewear collection in creative collaboration with British Rock ‘n’ Roll jewellers The Great Frog.

Utilising our production and craftsmanship expertise of over 50 years and the design signatures of The Great Frog, the collaboration fuses iconic frame shapes with strong ties to subcultures of heavy metal, rock ‘n’ roll, rockers, punks and bikers.

“The objective of this collaboration was simple, to merge both our stylistic codes. Incorporating The Great Frog’s irreverent aesthetic and our fundamentals of design to create something dramatic but wearable.

From the rivets to the hinges, the acetates and chain temple core, the materials are always very important to us. This was the first time we got to experiment with sterling silver applications, which was exciting for us. The result is a collection that is visibly robust, classic with a twist and the perfect blend of both our brand DNA’s.”

Alessandro Marcer, Creative Director for Cutler and Gross

The exclusive collection comprises five styles; three sunglasses and two opticals, which embody The Great Frog’s Creative Director, Reino Lehtonen-Riley’s passion for unexpected details. Each frame incorporates an iconic .925 sterling silver emblem which has become synonymous with the British Jewellery brand; The Reaper, Crossbones and Dagger. These emblems can be found on the temples and frontals, combined with Cutler and Gross’ handcrafted Italian acetates and classic shapes.

The Reaper is an oversized square sunglass which lends its silhouette to Cutler and Gross’ bestselling 1369, with British .925 sterling silver reaper emblem detailing.

“The sophistication of Cutler and Gross’ classic timeless silhouettes have been brought willingly into disrepute, adding unashamedly gauche embellishments in classic Great Frog style. By using traditional manufacturing techniques and precious metals, these works of art are handmade to the most exacting standards.

Cutler and Gross and The Great Frog have over 100 years combined history; perfecting their game, offering the best of British, gender-bending, anti-establishment, irreverent, iconic style.”

Crossbones is available as a sunglass and optical, featuring The Great Frog’s crossbones logo emblem, hand cast in .925 sterling silver, set on the most recent iteration of a Cutler and Gross frame that’s been present in every collection for almost 40 years.

Whilst The Dagger is more compact, it’s still packed with plenty of hidden details, available as both a sunglass and an optical, both with .925 sterling silver frontal detailing.

Handcrafted in Cutler and Gross’ Atelier in the Italian Dolomites, the collaboration colour palette embraces moody hues including herbal browns, deep reds, muted greys and military green shades. Punctuated with details that solidify both of brand identities; Cutler and Gross being known for their architectural acetates and The Great Frog for its irreverent symbolism. The Great Frog’s now iconic ‘lockdown link’ reimagined as a graphic temple core wire exemplifies this union perfectly, as seen below;

The collaboration launches Friday May 20th and is available to buy in Cutler and Gross standalone stores, online at www.cutlerandgross.com and selected stockists worldwide.
