A Philosophy of Craft

In 1969, Cutler and Gross opened its first store in Knightsbridge, London. It soon became a mecca for artists and icons who sought the distinctive designs and unparalleled quality of our frames. Each pair was crafted by hand, and this practice continues today. Cutler and Gross sunglasses and glasses are shaped by a team of artisans in our Italian atelier in the Dolomites, a region renowned for its optical excellence.

In 1972, just three years on from Cutler and Gross’s inception, The Great Frog established their first jewellery workshop down the road off Carnaby Street. With its black walls and stacks of skull rings, the subversive store became a place of pilgrimage for bikers, punks, and goths. The anarchic accessories began life as a block of wax, before being sculpted in Sterling Silver by founder Paterson Riley. Over 50 years have passed and yet this process remains the same, with Riley’s son and now Creative Director Reino Lehtonen-Riley continuing the tradition.

Two polarising aesthetics, one shared philosophy: hand craftsmanship.

An Alchemy of Creative Visions

The Chromatic Editions sunglasses and glasses fuse Cutler and Gross’s iconic silhouettes and discerning details with The Great Frog’s rebel roots. Each pair is handcrafted from the finest raw materials and punctuated with the jeweller’s legendary metalwork.

The Great Frog’s acid-tipped emblems have been translated into pins that gild the frames. Hand-cast in Sterling Silver, Daggers, Soaring Eagles, Skull and Crossbones, and Bones Link icons slice through the frontal and temples.

Five striking frames are reworked in new acetates, from glistening Sand Crystal to artful Brush Stroke. The frames are shaped from layers of pigmented colour and polished over the course of 96 hours for a gleaming finish.

Building upon two legacies and over a century of craftsmanship, the Chromatic Editions are artistry incarnate.
